B'nai Israel Religious School (BIRS) Curriculum

We are a warm and welcoming place for joyful Jewish learning. Nurturing teachers, bright classrooms, experiential learning, and a creative curriculum are designed to encourage our youth to explore and be proud of their Jewish identity, culture, and history, and to help develop informed and engaged Jewish adults.  Religious School at B’nai Israel is one of the benefits of family membership — there’s no extra tuition cost for your children to participate in our full curriculum.

Students in grades K-7 meet on Sunday mornings in person from
9:30–12:00.  We meet as a full school for morning T'fillah (prayer service) led by our students and teachers. The goal of these services is to attain the Hebrew and Judaic skills necessary for synagogue comfort.

Additionally, students meet in multi age classrooms for an
array of Judaica and Hebrew, Jewish History, and holiday and
Torah learning activities through varied art medium.

We teach about the ancient land of Israel up through the establishment of the modern State of Israel and our connection to the Jewish homeland. We talk about all the developments and inventions that Israel has contributed that benefit everyone around the world, including technology and medical advancements, as well as current events.

Students in grades 4-7 also meet virtually on Tuesday afternoons for individual, one on one lessons with either BIRS Director, Jacqui Schulefand, or Morah (teacher) Shari Lynn for intensive Hebrew reading fluency and prayer practice.  Each child will be met where they are to encourage pride and a sense of accomplishment.  We are able to support and encourage each student to succeed to the best of their ability at their own pace.

Our confirmation Class, which consists of students in grades 8 & 9 meet throughout the year and include activities such as class trips to New York City, inviting speakers and other age appropriate programs to allow students to discuss and grapple with real life situations that focuses on thoughtful conversation about Jewish ethics, values, and practices.
